Departure Checklist

You may not need everything on this list – it is a general list and may not cover specific items for your destinations.

Travel

  • Is your passport valid 6 months beyond your program end date and do you have 3 blank pages on your passport?
  • If you need a visa, have you obtained the proper documentation?
  • Do you know how to get from the airport to where you will be staying?

 Safety and Finance          

  • Have you made copies of your passport and all credit cards to leave at home with your emergency contact and to pack with you in your carry-on?
  • Have you confirmed with your bank that your ATM, pin codes, and credit cards will work in your destination country?
  • Have you determined if your bank and/or credit card company provides traveler assistance?
  • Have you updated your information on NYU Traveler? Please refer to the “safety abroad” info sheet for details.
  • Do you have your emergency contact card (with local emergency numbers) to keep on your person during your stay abroad?
  • Have you reviewed your host country information on the US Department of State website? http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/country.html

Health

  • If immunizations are recommended for your destination, have you received them? Do you have the necessary paperwork to illustrate this (e.g. yellow fever certification, polio vaccination)?
  • Have you printed a copy of your HTH insurance card?
  • Have you made yourself familiar with your health insurance services and policies through HTH Worldwide?
  • Do you have a full prescription of any medications that you will be taking, in their original containers?
  • Have you consulted the website for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention? cdc.gov

 Academic

  • Do you have the required academic course material (books, readings, etc.)
  • Have you submitted all required documents to the CGPH Global Coordinator?
  • Have you studied relevant historical, sociological and cultural information about your destination?

Local Considerations

  • Do you know the time difference between your hometown and your study site?
  • Do you know how much a meal will cost in your host location?
  • Do you know how to make an international phone call?
  • Do your family/friends/significant others have your contact and flight information?
  • Have you checked the exchange rate for your host country’s currency in the past month?
  • Do you know how to say “thank you” in your host country language?
  • Have you purchased voltage converters and/or adapters?
